Few things in life can steal away Ceri’s smile. One bright, gleeful, and sweet – even if perhaps it may not be as entirely honest as people expect it to be. This time, as she walks from one table to the next while holding her dear Toxel in her arms, her smile is honest indeed, because while her goal with coming to the contest hall had been to meet new people, seeing beckett carlson had still made her happy.

With first round jitters out of the way Hailee was more relaxed. “Emoooo!” Raijin, her Emolga cooed. She laughed and pet his head while he snacked on an apple, clearly more relaxed as well. “You’re so spoiled.” she snickered. [break][break]

This little event wasn’t so bad. It gave her a chance to meet new people which could prove beneficial for her love life, which was quite lacking recently if she was being honest. But beyond that it gave her the change to make connections. She could run into the next hot CEO and suddenly have an opportunity to make a fire pitch. [break][break]

She always had to be prepared. Especially for one in a lifetime chances like these. [break][break]

Reaching for a glass of water to clear her throat an unexpected yet familiar voice appeared, “I–... Hailee?” Hailee almost choked on her water as her bright irises shot up to stare into those familiar brown ones. [break][break]

“Ah fuck.” she cursed as she wiped her mouth with a napkin. When she thought of speed dating, meeting up with her ex was certainly not the thing that came to mind. Not to mention this left a bitter taste in her mouth. [break][break]

Hailee thought she had long come to terms with the end of their relationship and finally moved on. But seeing her here, looking for love again after running away from theirs well….it stung more than she thought it should. [break][break]

“Hey, it’s good to see you.” Ceri said with a smile. “Yeah.” she paused, “Wish I could say the same.” she sighed as she bit her lip. She didn’t mean that. Hailee always did have the bad habit of speaking without thinking. “Sorry. How have you been?” she asked after a moment of silence.

Ceri’s confidence has always been a pillar of who she is, one that makes her unshakable and aware that she can face most things that come her way. She works hard, she knows she’s smart, she knows she’s pretty, and she knows how to take advantage of both these things. But here is Hailee Jacobs, a reminder of all her faults and flaws.

”Damn. Cold… Fair, but cold.” There’s an unintended chuckle, and a slight smirk takes the place of her smile, sitting down with her Toxel on her lap.

Hailee has every right to hate her, Ceri knows as much, but it has been years. Surely she can’t still be mad, right?

At least that sure is Ceri’s mentality about it, because she has never been the type to focus on holding grudges. But, she knows that's not how Hailee is... or how she used to be.

Hailee could only respond with a passive shrug at Ceri’s initial response. It was a knee-jerk reaction. She’d already said it, nothing more could be done about the fact now. After the initial surprise Hailee began to acclimate to having Ceri around her yet again. [break][break]

Odd, to say the least, but she could adjust. Raijin on the other hand looked conflicted. Both knowing extensively how much pain Ceri’s leaving had caused her but also still be fond of Ceri herself. [break][break]

Hailee didn’t fault him, this was all a lot to handle all at once. “I've been alright.” she answered as burgundy orbs followed her as Ceri took her seat across from her. Hailee nodded slowly. It's not that she didn’t understand why she did it. That’s why this was all the more awkward for her. [break][break]

"How about you? What are you up to these days?" Gently stirring the ice in her water she offered a slight shrug as a small smirk appeared on her lips. “Oh you know, the usual. School and design. Design and school.” she said before taking a sip. “Oh and a little professional posing too.” she said as she briefly mentioned her modeling gig. [break][break]

Finally managing to muster up some courage since it seemed his master was able to hold a conversation, Raijin hopped out of her arms to sheepishly share an apple slice with Ceri just like he used to all those years ago. Still a sign that he cared about her deeply since he rarely shared his treats with anyone. [break][break]

“He missed you.” she said softly as she looked at Raijin fondly.

If she weren’t so used to this sort of thing, she’d think it’s funny how different their lives are despite being the same age. But Ceri has always been different from most people she meets in that sense, and even now she is still a student at Slateport University – although admittedly she spends much less time there than what she did as an undergraduate.

”You’ve been modeling? That’s awesome! Hope you’ve been getting good gigs.” She smiles at that, her head tilting slightly, but it’s Hailee’s next words that earn her Ceri’s undivided attention, warm russet gaze meeting hers.

She looks at the Emolga then, and at the sight, there are one too many memories.

”Hi Raijin.” Her tone is softer now, kinder. ”I missed him too.”

Hailee couldn’t complain too much about the gigs she’d been booking lately. Doing all of this on her own without the proper use of her family name made things take a little longer but if it meant that the credit would lie solely with her she’d take it. [break][break]

Ceri’s gaze softened once she looked at Raijin. She wasn’t even sure if she noticed it herself, but Hailee did. She didn’t say anything, just studied her features for a while longer. Hailee hated to admit it but it really was good to see her again. [break][break]

If anything, at least it gave her peace of mind that Ceri was alright. [break][break]

“Hi Raijin.” She greeted the emolga softly, who nudged her hand with the apple slice to prompt her to take the peace offering. “I missed him too.” she added and Hailee gave Jin-Jin a smile of approval. [break][break]

Ceri’s eyes met Hailee’s once more before she continued, "And you.” she added after a brief pause. Hailee sighed, finally giving in and giving up on being so abrasive around her. It'd been years and quite frankly she’d rather not have to add one more unhealthy dosage of bitterness to her already full plate. [break][break]

She offered Ceri a small knowing smile. “I---” she breathed before she chuckled softly, “Let’s be honest, you know I’ve missed you too.” she said before gently picking at her manicured nails, “And…for what its worth, I’m really sorry about your mom.” it needed to be said. [break][break]

If she had the chance she would’ve been there for Ceri in a heartbeat. She had to have known that. But yet Hailee couldn’t bring herself to utter the words. It was all in the past now and Ceri had to live the worst part of her life alone.

Even in the endless flow of time, there are some things that don’t immediately change. Her fondness for the Emolga sure hasn’t, and even if romantic feelings may no longer be there, her fondness for Hailee Jacobs hasn’t as well – that much is obvious now that she’s seeing her again.

Ceri may have grown used to lying and pretending in order to have things be the way she wishes them to be, but she won’t lie about this.

”Thank you.” She takes the apple slice, petting the adorable rodent, yet her gratitude is meant for both the pokémon and its trainer. She’s thankful that Hailee is here, that she’s willing to talk to her, and ultimately, that she chooses not to hate her.

But, the bell rings then, indicating the end of the round and thus of their encounter...

There’s a sigh at this, a slight gesture of disappointment that is soon followed by a bright smile aimed Hailee’s way. ”We should hang out sometime to catch up properly. If you want, that is… It was good to see you, Hailee.”

“Thank you.” she says as she takes the apple from Jin-Jin who quickly chirps happily, pleased that the offering was accepted. He made his way back to Hailee’s arms soon after and nuzzled into her. Ceri didn’t say anything more on the subject which was understandable. But Hailee couldn’t let this opportunity pass her by, she’d regret it. [break][break]

Just as things seemed to normalize between the two there time was up. The bell rang and interrupted their conversation which caused Hailee to ruffle her hair in frustration. She’d just come to terms with everything and now…[break][break]

“We should hang out sometime to catch up properly. If you want, that is… It was good to see you, Hailee.” Ceri said as she got up from the table to leave. Her smile was bright and it seemed genuine.[break][break]

She paused for a moment more before offering her a bright smile of her own, “Sure thing. You know where you can find me.” she said with a smirk, “...Take care, ladybug.” Hailee said as she referred to her by the name she’d given her way back. Just one last time. She wouldn’t ever really have proper closure, that she was sure. So she needed to take what she could get. With this, she could finally say she moved on.
